DAFF Evaluating Large Pelagic Longline Appeals

Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

The agriculture, forestry and fisheries minister, Senzeni Zokwana, is busy considering and evaluating appeals relating to the Large Pelagic Longline sector.

In a statement, the agriculture, forestry and fisheries department added that the decision on the Large Pelagic Longline appeals would be finalised by the end of February 2018.

In terms of the Hake Inshore Trawl sector appeals, negotiations with category B appellants are continuing and an application for leave to appeal the High Court decision that the minister reconsider his decisions with regard to category C has been launched.

According to the department, the minister cannot deal with the Hake Inshore Trawl appeals until all pending judicial reviews have been resolved.

Meanwhile, the department recently briefed parliament on its draft Annual Performance Plan 2018/19.

Some of the highlights include a national policy on comprehensive producer development support to be tabled in cabinet for approval, AgriBEE guidelines to be published, climate change mitigation and adaptation plan implementation guidelines to be drawn up and the Aquaculture Development Bill in the pipeline.
