Background: 

Before being appointed as minister of arts and culture, Paul Shipokosa Mashatile served as deputy minister in the same ministry: a position to which he was appointed in May 2009. Prior to that he was premier of Gauteng province. Having served in the Gauteng provincial legislature since 1994, Mashatile was member of the executive council (MEC) for various portfolios including housing; transport and public works; safety; and finance and economic affairs. He has been the ANC’s provincial chairman in Gauteng since 2007 and is a member of the South African Communist Party (SACP). Prior to 1994, as a founding member of the Alexandra Youth Congress Mashatile was active in the United Democratic Front (UDF) until he was detained without trial in 1985. He has a post-graduate diploma in economic principles from the University of London.
