Discussion Document on Digital Sound Broadcasting Drawn Up

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has published its Discussion Document on Digital Sound Broadcasting (DSB) for public comment.

Published in Government Gazette 41534, the discussion document forms part of ICASA's intention to conduct an inquiry to examine the prospects of implementation of DSB services in the country.

The inquiry also seeks to examine the manner in which the implementation of DSB services can improve spectrum efficiency and management.

The framework for the Discussion Document has been set out as follows:

•    Introduction and purpose;
•    Discussion;
•    South African environment;
•    The Policy;
•    Legislative/Regulatory Framework;
•    DSB Trials;
•    International Agreement applicable to DSB;
•    Types of DSB systems;
•    Standardisation of DSB systems;
•    Broadcasting Frequency Bands;
•    International benchmarking; and
•    Market Analysis.

Those interested in submitting written comments on the Discussion Document should do so within 45 working days of the publication of the notice.

Meanwhile, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has, in notice 162, invited applications for the position of Group Executive Media Technology Infrastructure (MTI).

The main purpose of the position as well as the duties and responsibilities; required knowledge, skills and abilities; and education and experience are detailed in the notice.
