Parliament has called for comment on the recently tabled Competition Amendment Bill.

The portfolio committee on economic development seeks comment on the proposed legislation until 17 August 2018.

The economic development minister, Ebrahim Patel, has described the recently tabled Competition Amendment Bill as a “new deal for economic transformation and inclusion”.

The minister was briefing journalists on the proposed legislation in parliament.

Section 232 Duties on Autos Under the Spotlight

The trade and industry minister, Rob Davies, has pointed out that African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) benefits for South Africa would be significantly eroded if Section 232 duties were imposed on motor vehicle exports from South Africa.

In a statement, the trade and industry department added that this was due to Section 232 tariffs effectively suspending AGOA preferences.
