National Grading System for Tourism in Place

Department of Tourism

The National Grading System for Tourism has been published in Government Gazette 42010.

The tourism department published the grading system in terms of the Tourism Act.

The grading system contains the definitions of the standard operating procedures for the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA).

The TGCSA was set up in 2000 to grade all categories of accommodation in South Africa.

It aims to establish and maintain a recognisable and credible globally benchmarked system of quality assurance for accommodation and MESE (Meetings, Exhibitions and Special Events) experiences in South Africa.

Some of the document’s objectives include listing the activities that make up the TGCSA operations processes, clearly define all the roles and teams involved in the TGCSA operations processes, ensure a single reference for all activities involved in the grading process and provide a reference for process review, optimization and related system development for process automation.

Issues covered include new application for grading, process new application invoice payments, new invoice discount and funding, application for renewal of grading, physical assessment of establishment, awarding certificates and plaques, cancellation of membership, refund process, customer feedback and controls and measures.

Meanwhile, the department recently briefed parliament on the full plan of the Oceans Economy- Coastal and Marine Tourism.

The Coastal and Marine Tourism (CMT) Implementation Plan was approved by cabinet in 2017.

The CMT Implementation Plan is being implemented in a nodal/cluster approach that aims to prioritise destinations rather than individual tourism projects/products, support the enhancement of the general environment in which attractions and products are located, strengthen the linkages between attractions and improve the quality of the tourist experience within destinations and strengthen linkages with other areas of Operation Phakisa.

The Implementation Plan is reviewed on an annual basis to allow for the inclusion of new initiatives.
