Amendments to School Calendar Policy Proposed

Proposed amendments to the National Policy for Determining School Calendars for Public Schools in South Africa have been drawn up.

The basic education department published the draft amendments in Government Gazette 41578 for comment.

They were drawn up in terms of the National Education Policy Act.

According to the department, the proposed amendments flow from recommendations made by stakeholders.

The proposals serve as a set of specifications to ensure consistency in determining school calendars.

The draft amendments focus on principles that must be taken into account when determining the school calendar; specifications according to which the school calendar must be determined and allocation of time in the calendar; clusters and staggering; time frame, process and steps to be taken in determining the school calendar.

Some of the principles that must be taken into account include education requirements, transport and travel infrastructure, consistency of school holiday schedule, planning in advance and invitation to comment on proposed calendar.

Comment is invited one month after the date of publication (19 April 2018).
