Comment Sought on Revised Language Policy for Higher Education

Comment has been called on the draft revised Language Policy for Higher Education.

The department of higher education published the draft language policy in Notice 147 in Government Gazette 41463.

The policy is available on the department’s website at www.dhet.gov.za or by contacting 012 312 5253.

Those interested in submitting written comments should do so within 21 days after publication of the notice.

Meanwhile, the department of basic education has called for comments on the National Policy on the Prevention and Management of Learner Pregnancy in schools.

The draft Policy, published in Notice 128 in Gazette 41456, has been developed to guide officials, principals, school management teams and educators – who are in effect in loco parentis – in their response to learner pregnancies.

The draft Policy addresses the following matters:

•    The high rates of pregnancy among learners;
•    The familial and social context within which this occurs;
•    Options for reduction of unintended and unwanted pregnancies;
•    Management of its pre- and post-natal implications;
•    Limitation of associated stigma and discrimination; and
•    The retention of re-enrolment of affected learners in school.

Those interested in submitting written comments on the draft Policy have until 10 February 2018 to do so.

Meanwhile, the department also called for comments from stakeholder bodies and members of the public regarding the following amendments:

•    Notice 129: National Education Policy Act - National Policy pertaining to the Programme and Promotion Requirements of the National Curriculum Statement Grades R-12. The draft amendments are available on the departmental website at www.education.gov.za The closing date for the receipt of comments is set at 21 days after publication of the notice; and

•    Notice 130: South African Schools Act – Draft Regulations pertaining to the National Curriculum Statement Grades R-12. The draft documents are available on the departmental website at www.education.gov.za The closing date for the receipt of comments is set at 21 days after publication of the notice.
