Minister of Basic Education (2009-)

Background: 

Before being appointed minister of basic education in May 2009, Angie Matsie Motshekga served on the Gauteng provincial legislature as member of the executive council (MEC) for education and, prior to that, MEC for social development. She was director in the office of the president between 1994 and 1997. Deputy chair of the ANC’s provincial executive in Gauteng and president of the ANC Women’s League, earlier in her career as an activist Motshekga was involved in the unity talks leading to the formation of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu). A teacher by profession, she lectured at the Soweto College of Education before joining the staff of the University of the Witwatersrand where she lectured until 1994. Motshekga holds a BA in education from the University of the North, a B Ed from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MA in education from the same institution.
