Cultural Heritage Survey Guidelines and Assessment Tools for Protected Areas in South Africa have been published in Government Gazette 41306.

The guidelines are to be used when implementing the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act.

They are designed to facilitate effective management of cultural heritage resources in protected areas.

According to the guidelines, natural and cultural heritage are “inextricably intertwined” within protected areas.

Some of the issues covered in the guidelines include cultural heritage management in protected areas, heritage assessment criteria and grading, cultural heritage survey, assessment tools, additional assessment tools and tools for inventories of different categories of cultural heritage resources.

Meanwhile, in Gazette 41306, the environmental affairs department has declared the Member of the Executive Council responsible for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development in the Gauteng Province as the Management Authority responsible for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.

The declaration applies for five years.

It was made in terms of the World Heritage Convention Act.
