Department of Environmental Affairs

Norms and standards that seek to verify the existence of private nature reserves in practices are in place.

The environmental affairs department published the Norms and Standards for the Inclusion of Private Nature Reserves in the Register of Protected Areas of South Africa in Government Gazette 41224.

The norms and standards were drawn up in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act.

They focus on the process to verify the existence of a private nature reserve, norms for the designation of private nature reserves, management of private nature reserves and reporting.

Meanwhile, the department has released the 2016/17 National Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Report.

The report provides an overview of the measures taken by the Green Scorpions in giving effect to Section 24 of the Constitution during the 2016/17 financial year.
