Background: 

Bomo Edna Molewa served eighteen months as minister of social development before being appointed minister of water and environmental affairs in November 2010. A member of parliament in the National Assembly between 1994 and 1996, she was the first woman to chair the parliamentary portfolio committee on trade and industry. Deployed to the provincial legislature of North West province in 1996, Molewa served as member of the executive council (MEC) for tourism, conservation and the environment until 1998, when she became MEC for economic development and tourism. She served as MEC for agriculture, conservation and the environment between 2000 and 2004. Active in the trade union movement for nearly twenty years, Molewa chaired the Warmbaths branch of the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union (SACAAWU) between 1976 and 1990, serving as SACCAWU’s national deputy president for seven years from 1987. She was appointed deputy chairman of the Garankuwa branch of the ANC Women’s League in 1992 and served as its provincial chairman for the North West between 2005 and 2008. Molewa has been a member of the League’s national executive committee since 2003 and was elected chairman of the ANC’s provincial executive committee in 2008. A qualified teacher, Molewa has completed a course in leadership at the Kennedy School of Governance at Harvard.
