Mr Cyril Ramaphosa became the Deputy President in 2014. While studying Law at Wits, he became politically active and was detained for his activities. He was one of the founding members of the National Union of Mine Workers in 1982, and became the General Secretary of the Union, until he was elected as Secretery General of the ANC in 1991. He was a member of the team negotiating the peaceful transition to a democratic South Africa in 1994. In 1997 he moved to the private sector. He was re-elected to the ANC National Executive Committe (NEC) in 2007.
