Background: 

Prior to his appointment as minister of health in May 2009, Pakishe Aaron Motsoaledi was member of the executive council (MEC) for agriculture, land and the environment in the Limpopo provincial legislature. He has also served the province as MEC for education and transport. A medical doctor by profession, Motsoaledi trained at the University of Natal where he was active in student politics and as a leader in the United Democratic Front (UDF). He has practised medicine in various public hospitals, some of which were located in remote rural areas. Motsoaledi has been a member of the ANC’s Limpopo provincial executive committee for nineteen years and now serves on the party’s national executive committee.
