Parliament Passes Electoral Laws Amendment Bill

Parliament has passed the Electoral Laws Amendment Bill and sent it to president Ramaphosa for assent.

The bill, designed to enhance the existing legislative mechanisms that ensure free and fair elections, was tabled in parliament in October 2018.

Draft Electoral Laws Amendment Bill on the Cards

Parliament

A draft bill that aims to amend relevant electoral legislation in order to allow independent candidates to stand for public office in provincial and national elections is in the pipeline.

The Draft Electoral Laws Amendment Bill was drafted by Mosiuoa Lekota, a Congress of the People member of parliament.

Civil Union Amendment Bill Sent to NCOP

National Assembly

The national assembly has passed the Civil Union Amendment Bill and sent it to the national council of provinces for concurrence.

The private member’s bill, drawn up by D Carter of COPE, was tabled in parliament in May 2018.
