Cabinet Approves Action Plan to Combat Racism

Department of Justice and Constitutional Development

Cabinet has approved the National Action Plan to Combat Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (NAP).

In a statement, the justice and constitutional development department welcomed the approval and described the NAP as an important tool to “prevent and combat racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic and other discriminatory conduct and forms of prejudice that we have been experiencing in our country recently”.

According to the department, approval of the NAP followed a “rigorous process which was overseen by a Steering Committee comprising various stakeholders including government departments, Chapter 9 institutions, broader civil society organisations and other relevant role-players”.

The NAP will now be tabled at the United Nations.

It contains a “targeted set of actions, interventions, measures and timeframes, with a proposed governance structure for the implementation of the NAP, as well as clear monitoring and evaluation arrangements and a reporting framework”.

The NAP will be published on the department’s website within a week.

Meanwhile, the department has published two notices in Government Gazette 42264 detailing the appointment of places for the holding of magistrates’ courts:

• Notice 284 – appointment of Plettenberg Bay court as a place for the holding of a court for Knysna magisterial district to serve the Bitou municipality.
• Notice 285 – appointment of Booysens court as a place for the holding of a court for the Johannesburg Central Magisterial District.
