Essential Services Committee Investigates Health Services

The Essential Services Committee (ESC) is in the process of conducting an investigation as to whether certain services are essential.

The labour department announced the investigation in Government Gazette 41854.

The services under investigation, rendered by private health for the public sector, include:

•    Pharmaceutical services and dispensary;
•    Record keeping;
•    Transport;
•    Laundry; and
•    Research.

The ESC is also considering the variation/cancellation of certain designations on the generation, transmission and distribution of power.

The following public hearing dates have been set down:

•    25 September in Port Elizabeth;
•    27 September in Witbank;
•    1 October in Durban;
•    5 October in Cape Town; and
•    8 October in Johannesburg.

Those interested in making oral representations in relation to the investigation must indicate their intention to do so on or before 21 September.

Meanwhile, in Notice 889 in Gazette 41855, the National Bargaining Council for the Electrical Industry has had the period of operation of its Collective Bargaining Levy Agreement extended.

The agreement has been extended by a further period of 12 months.
