Trade Unions to be Briefed on National Minimum Wage

The labour department is planning to hold briefing sessions for trade unions on the national minimum wage and proposed legislative amendments.

According to a statement, the department indicated that the draft amendments include to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Labour Relations Act.

An Accord on Collective Bargaining and Industrial Action and a Code of Good Practice are also in the pipeline.

During a briefing in parliament in October 2017, the department pointed out that the drafting of the Draft Basic Conditions of Employment Amendment Bill and the Draft National Minimum Wage Bill had been completed.

The briefing sessions will continue until February 2018.

Employers will be targeted for briefings early next year.

Cabinet approved the Draft Basic Conditions of Employment Amendment Bill, the Draft National Minimum Wage Bill and the Draft Labour Relations Amendment Bill on 1 November 2017.

The bills are not yet available but are expected to be gazetted on 10 November 2017.

Meanwhile, the department is to hold a diving regulations workshop with the diving industry on 16-17 November 2017 in Stellenbosch.

The workshop will focus on improving compliance in the industry.

Some of the topics to be covered include risk assessment in the diving industry, control of diving operations, management of diving operations and reporting of occupational injuries and diseases.
