Section 25 of the Constitution to be Reviewed

Parliament

The national assembly has passed a motion to review section 25 of the Constitution that deals with the right of property ownership.

In a statement, parliament indicates that the motion was brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters.

The EFF wanted an ad hoc committee set up to review and amend section 25 of the Constitution to make it possible for the State to expropriate land in the public interest without compensation.

The African National Congress amended the motion to read as such: “With the concurrence of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) instruct the Constitutional Review Committee to review section 25 of the Constitution and other clauses where necessary to make it possible for the state to expropriate land in the public interest without compensation.”

The Constitutional Review Committee must produce a report by 30 August 2018.
