Work on Submissions Report on Land Expropriation Underway

A final draft of the report on submissions on the review of section 25 of the Constitution is likely to be completed by 3 August 2018.

The Joint Constitutional Review Committee was tasked with reviewing Section 25 and proposing constitutional amendments to allow for the expropriation of land in the public interest without compensation.

Over 700 000 submissions were received during the call for written comment period.

A service provider is to be appointed to assist with the analyzing of the submissions.

The public hearings, which kicked off in the Northern Cape on 26 June 2018, will be completed on 4 August in the Western Cape.

In a statement, the Committee confirmed that public hearings will also be held in parliament during August 2018.

In September, the committee will deliberate on its draft report before tabling its recommendations to both house of parliament.
