Draft Mining Charter on Track

Department of Mineral Resources

Community consultations on the Draft Mining Charter were recently concluded.

The mineral resources minister, Gwede Mantashe, confirmed this during his department’s budget vote speech in the National Council of Provinces.

“We are encouraged by the positive contributions made, both written and verbal, that have been invaluable,” he said.

The minister announced a summit will soon be held where the Draft Charter will be presented to stakeholders prior to tabling before cabinet for approval and publication in the Gazette.

As regards the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Amendment Bill, the minister appealed to members of the NCOP to prioritise finalization of the bill in the interests of policy and regulatory certainty.

The select committee on land and mineral resources recently discussed negotiating mandates from the various provinces on the bill.

The minister also pointed out that discussions with the police ministry were underway to strengthen approaches on dealing with illegal mining.
