Energy Minister Outlines Policy on Nuclear Power

Department of Energy

The new energy minister, David Mahlobo, has confirmed that the key driver to South Africa’s policy decision to pursue nuclear power is the “economics of the energy source.”

The minister was speaking at the 44th Policy Group Meeting of the Generation IV International Forum in Cape Town.

He added that South Africa has made a “policy decision to pursue nuclear energy as part of the energy mix and recognise the role of nuclear as a base-load source of energy in ensuring security of supply and climate change mitigation.”

The minister also indicated that South Africa remained interested in deploying the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Technology in the future.

“At this stage, we are focusing on readily deployable technologies to address our electricity demand needs going into the future as our coal fired power plants become decommissioned.”

The minister also emphasised that South Africa recognised the role of nuclear power in ensuring security of energy supply and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
