Eskom Application for Additional Renewable Energy Approved

Department of Public Enterprises

Eskom’s application to buy additional renewable energy from Independent Power Producers has been approved.

In a statement, the public enterprises department confirmed that Eskom had applied to the public enterprises minister in January 2018 to purchase additional energy.

Minister Lynne Brown declared that the “conclusion of the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to enable the implementation of the outstanding projects under bid windows 3.5, 4 and 4.5 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme (REIPPP) is critical to implementation of the national energy policy as articulated in the Integrated Resource Plan of 2010.”

The minister added that government remained committed to reducing South Africa’s carbon footprint.

She said that proposed amendments to the National Energy Regulation Act would “enable Eskom and NERSA to efficiently and effectively resolve deadlocks relating to tariffs and regulatory frameworks by including a pre-determined appeal mechanism.”

Meanwhile, the department recently briefed parliament on governance of state-owned companies.

The draft government shareholder management bill is currently under construction.

A shareholder risk management framework designed to mitigate systemic risks was also being developed.
