Small and Medium Scale Miners Under the Spotlight

Department of Mineral Resources

The mineral resources minister, Mosebenzi Zwane, has vowed to intensify support to small and medium scale mining enterprises in 2018.

The minister was speaking at the opening of the 2018 Annual Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town.

He added that the emergence of small and medium enterprises was vital for the future of the mining industry as they were the “engines of tomorrow’s growth and will embrace the participation of women, youth and rural communities.”

The mineral resources department would provide support in partnership with development finance institutions and the established mining industry.

The minister also referred to the Mine Health and Safety Summit to be held in November 2018.

It would provide an opportunity for “reflection and refinement of strategies and knowledge sharing” towards attaining zero harm in the industry by 2024.

In his speech, the Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe, committed to doing his best, as Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the Revitalisation of Distressed Mining Communities and Labour Sending Areas, to “unblock any obstacles to development and steer the sector towards the attainment of our collective vision.”
