Before being appointed as minister of public enterprises in November 2010, Malusi “Knowledge” Nkanyezi Gigaba served as deputy minister of home affairs for eighteen months. As a member of parliament in the National Assembly from 1999, he has served on the parliamentary portfolio committees on agriculture and land afffairs, and on trade and industry. A student activist from his days at the University of Durban Westville, Gigaba joined the ANC, South African Communist Party (SACP) and the ANC Youth League in 1990. He was president of the ANC Youth League between 1996 and 2004 and has also chaired its political committee and economic development commission. Gigaba holds a BA in pedagogics, and an MA in social policy from the University of Durban Westville.
