The finance minister, Mr Nhlanhla Musa Nene, has served as an MP since 1999. In the 2000s, Mr Nene was co-chairperson of the joint budget committee and chairperson of the standing committee on finance. While working for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1990, Mr Nene organised the first ever strike in the local financial sector. He became a labour union shop steward and led a negotiating team for better working conditions in the financial sector during the period 1990 to 1995. Mr Nene was a Metropolitan Life employee for 15 years rising to the position of regional administrative manager. He was appointed deputy minister of finance on 5 November 2008 and re-appointed on 11 May 2009 serving until his promotion to finance minister. Mr Nene holds a B.Com Honours degree in Economics from the University of the Western Cape (UWC). He also obtained a Diploma in Marketing Management DMS, Advanced Diploma in Economic Policy from the UWC, a Certificate in Economic Policy from University of South Africa and a Certificate in Macro and Micro Economics from the University of London.
