Background: 

Elizabeth Dipuo Peters became minister of transprot in July 2013. She was appointed minister of energy in May 2009, prior to which she served five years as premier of the Northern Cape province. She was Northern Cape provincial member of the executive council (MEC) for health between 1999 and 2004, and ANC chief whip in the provincial legislature from 1997. As a founder member and women’s organiser for the South African Youth Congress, Peters served on its executive committee until joining the ANC Youth League in 1990 as secretary for women’s affairs. She was active in student politics while attending the University of the North, where she obtained a BA in social work in 1987. Peters also has a certificate in executive management from the graduate school of business at the University of Cape Town.
