Background: 

Tina Monica Joemat-Pettersson became minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in May 2009. Appointed to the provincial legislature of the Northern Cape in 1994, she served as member of the executive council (MEC) for education, arts and culture until 1999 and for education in 2003. The following year, she became MEC for agriculture and land reform: a position she held until her appointment as a member of cabinet. Joemat-Pettersson has served as treasurer of the ANC’s provincial executive committee; member of the national executive committee of the ANC Women’s League; member of the central committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP); and SACP provincial chairman for the Northern Cape. While at university she played an active role in student politics and, as a teacher, was a member of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu). Before joining the Northern Cape’s provincial legislature, she lectured in English at the University of the Free State. Joemat-Pettersson holds a BA in English and history from the University of the Western Cape and a diploma in higher education from the same institution. She has also completed a programme in executive management at the University of Cape Town’s graduate school of business.
