Salary Adjustments for Public Office Bearers Recommended

The Presidency

A 4% annual adjustment to the salaries of public office bearers (POB) for the 2018/19 financial year has been recommended.

The presidency published the recommendations of the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers in Government Gazette 42040.

The Commission is tasked with making annual recommendations relating to the salaries and/or the upper limits of the salaries, allowances, benefits of POBs and the resources required by some to enable them to perform their respective duties effectively.

Factors taken into account when making the recommendations included the role, status, duties, functions and responsibilities of the POBs concerned, affordability, inflation and available resources.

Meanwhile, the presidency has announced that president Ramaphosa is busy considering a raft of bills recently passed by parliament and sent for assent.

The list includes the Public Audit Amendment Bill; Political Party Funding Bill; Extension of Security of Tenure Amendment Bill; National Minimum Wage Bill; Basic Conditions of Employment Amendment Bill; Labour Relations Amendment Bill; Liquor Product Amendment Bill, and Labour Laws Amendment Bill.

According to the presidency, the “president is giving priority to his constitutional duty of ensuring the constitutionality of all the Bills passed by Parliament”.

“All efforts are being made to expedite the processing of these Bills without compromising the obligation imposed on the President by the Constitution.”
