Size and Shape of Government Under Review

The Presidency

The size and shape of government is under review.

In a statement, the presidency indicates that the review flows from the 2018 State of the Nation Address where president Ramaphosa declared that the “configuration, number and size of national government departments would be reassessed.”

The president also announced during the speech that economic growth, development and transformation depended on a strong and capable state.

In a recent written reply to the Democratic Alliance’s David Maynier, the president confirmed that the process of reviewing the size and shape of the national executive and government departments was underway.

The review will seek to establish the “synergy between the Constitution and legislation on one hand and the national macro-organisation of the national government, on the other.”

In terms of a timeframe, the plan is to complete the review in time for the sixth administration.
