Transformation in Agricultural Sector Under the Spotlight

The Presidency

Transformation in the agricultural sector remains a key objective for government.

President Zuma made this clear during an address at a gala dinner hosted by the African Farmers’ Association of South Africa in Boksburg.

President Zuma stressed that “such transformation does not mean destroying what we have and what works. It also does not mean that we want to destroy commercial agriculture. We fully support all our farmers, black and white, established and emerging.”

According to the president, transformation is designed to allow “the entry of black people to participate meaningfully in the economy, and in this case, the food production value chain.”

As part of the process, government will continue to provide support to smallholder farmers including support for the commercialisation programme for 450 black smallholder farmers per year.

Some of the initiatives in place to achieve transformation include finalising the AgriBEE Enforcement Regulations, the setting up of the AgriBEE Fund and the establishment of a funding scheme for black foresters.

Plans are also afoot to provide more marketing outlets for emerging farmers.
