Indigenous Knowledge Bill in the Pipeline

Department of Science and Technology

The department of science and technology says the legislation to protect indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) is on its way to parliament.

A spokesperson for the department told the parliamentary committee involved that the draft IKS bill had been approved by the department.  A submission to the minister of science and technology, for approval for further consultation with other government departments, was now in process.

It was reiterated that the broad objectives of the legislation were “protection, promotion, development and management of IKSs in the form of sui generis legislation”.

It was also reported that the research ethics and database policy had been accepted.

On the accreditation and certification of IK holders the spokesperson said draft accreditation and a certification regulatory framework had been developed and that the department had approved a draft regulatory policy document.
