No Hearings on Prohibited Sutherland Mining Activities

Department of Science and Technology

No public hearings will be held on the proposed prohibition of certain mining activities within the Sutherland Central Astronomy Advantage (CAA) Area.

The science and technology department announced this in Government Gazette 42049.

Comment was called in July 2018 on the notice of intention to declare certain mining activities within the CAA Area prohibited.

The activities are open cast mining and mining dumps at ground level and hydraulic fracturing or fracking.

The plan is for the declared Sutherland CAA Area to be protected, preserved and properly maintained in respect of light pollution, dust pollution, earth tremors or interference in any other way.

Written comment was invited until 25 September 2018.

According to Notice 1261, the science and technology minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, has decided that no hearings on the matter are required and the declaration of the prohibition of certain mining activities will be published in the Gazette soon.
