Background: 

Prior to her appointment as minister of science and technology in May 2009, Grace Naledi Mandisa Pandor served five years as minister of education. She chaired the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) between 1999 and 2004, was deputy-chair of the NCOP from 1998 and served as ANC chief whip in the National Assembly between1994 and 1998. Pandor was also a member of the parliamentary portfolio committee on education and convenor of its sub-committee on higher education. She holds a BA from the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland; an MA in education from the University of London; and an MA in linguistics from the University of Stellenbosch. Pandor also has a diploma in development leadership from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Spanning ten years, her career as a university lecturer ended in 1994 when she left her postion as senior lecturer for academic support at the University of Cape Town to enter Parliament. Pandor has also served as chairman of the ANC’s Athlone branch and chaired the regional executive of the National Education Crisis Committee (NECC) for the Western Cape between 1991 and 1993. She was the first woman chancellor of the Cape Technikon.
