Draft Child Care and Protection Policy Under Construction

Department of Social Development

A Draft Child Care and Protection Policy is in the pipeline.

The social development department announced this during a briefing in parliament on a foster care progress report.

According to the department, the draft policy will be tabled in cabinet for approval by the end of March 2018.

The proposed policy covers all orphans or abandoned children who are not in need of care and protection and are in the care of relatives.

It will also strengthen provision of prevention and early intervention services for vulnerable children who are not necessarily in need of care and protection as defined in section 150 of the Children’s Act.

Amendments to the Children’s Act and the Social Assistance Act are proposed.

One proposed amendment will place orphaned and abandoned children who are living with relatives on the list of those who may be in need of care and protection.
