Background: 

Having served as deputy minister of social development since May 2009, Bathabile Olive Dlamini was appointed minister for the same portfolio in November 2010. As a member of parliament in the National Assembly, she served on the parliamentary portfolio committees for correctional services and, subsequently, social development. Active in the underground structures of the ANC before its unbanning in 1990, Dlamini was appointed to the leadership group responsible for building structures in Natal for the re-launched ANC Women’s League, of which she became general secetary in 1998. Dlamini served the Women’s League in that capacity for ten years. She holds a BA in social studies from the University of Zululand, where she was active in student politics.
