Background: 

Prior to her appointment in May 2009 as minister of mineral resources, Susan Shabangu served as deputy minister of safety and security between 2004 and 2009, and as deputy minister of minerals and energy from 1996 to 2004. Active in politics since the 1980s as a member and assistant secretary of the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW), she was also a dedicated trade unionist. Shabangu served the Transport and General Workers’ Union as national women’s coordinator, and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) as a member of its national women’s sub-committee. She also served on the organising committee for the Release Mandela Campaign. In 1994, Shabangu became a member of parliament in the National Assembly, having been elected by Cosatu as one of its regional candidates. Before being appointed to cabinet, she was a member of several parliamentary portfolio committees including labour, transport, and trade and industry.  Shabangu has also served as vice-chairman of the National Labour and Development Institute (Naledi) and treasurer of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco).
