Transport Legislation Under Review

Department of Transport

A ministerial task team consisting of representatives from the justice department, National Prosecuting Authority and Road Traffic Management Corporation has been set up to review current transport legislation.

The transport minister, Blade Nzimande, announced this during his department’s budget vote speech in parliament.

The task team will also seek to reclassify traffic violation from schedule 5.

The minister also announced that the AARTO demerit points system will be implemented at a national level once the AARTO Act is in force.

The department will also drive transformation in the aviation industry, increase the number of law enforcement officers on the roads, call for law enforcement to be declared an essential service and foster close relations with the taxi industry.

In her budget vote speech, the deputy minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, also shone the spotlight on the aviation industry.

“We will thus, unapologetically take drastic measures to foster the transformation agenda, eradicate gate keeping and bottlenecks by eliminating the reliance on privately owned aviation academies which have a record of discriminating State funded African students while promoting and qualifying all their white counterparts.”
